How to Build a Personal AI Assistant for Free (It Messages Me on WhatsApp Every Morning)
Let me tell you about the small message that changed how my mornings feel.
Most days, before I have properly opened my eyes, my phone gives a soft buzz. It isn't an alarm and it isn't another notification screaming for attention. It's a calm WhatsApp message with the important parts of my inbox, written the way a thoughtful friend would say it. Short. Clear. No noise.
“For the first time, my phone felt like it was working for me, not the other way round.”
I didn't hire anyone. I didn't write a program. I used an AI agent from Base44, on the free plan, connected it to my Gmail, Google Drive and Google Sheets, and asked it to talk to me on WhatsApp. This post is the whole story, with the feelings, the exact steps, a diagram, the limits I ran into, and the links so you can build your own.
Quick honesty note: this is my personal experience, not an advertisement, and I don't speak for Base44. Features, limits and plan rules change, so please check the official pages linked at the end before you rely on anything.
Anyone who works long hours knows the quiet guilt of an unread inbox. Bills, receipts, messages, updates. You tell yourself you'll check later, and later becomes tomorrow. I didn't want a fancy robot. I wanted something very small: just tell me what matters, and let me ask simple questions without opening five apps.
I had tried to-do apps and reminders before. They all asked me to do more work: type things in, tag them, organise them. What I really wanted was the opposite. I wanted something that would read the things I already receive, and then speak to me in a place I already use every day. WhatsApp.
Base44 is a platform where you describe what you want in everyday language and an AI builds or does it for you. It started as a way to create apps by chatting, and it now also has what it calls a Superagent. Base44's own documentation describes it as an assistant that takes action across your connected tools, files and memory, which you can chat with in Base44 or in messaging apps like WhatsApp, and which can also work on its own on a schedule or when something happens in one of your tools (Base44 docs: Building a Superagent).
Read that again slowly, because it is the whole magic: it can chat with me on WhatsApp, and it can also wake up by itself and do a job on a schedule. That second part is what makes a morning summary possible.
I connected three Google tools to my agent:
- Gmail: so it can read my email and find what matters.
- Google Drive: so it can look at files when I ask about them.
- Google Sheets: so it can work with my spreadsheets when I need numbers.
Then I did two things with it that I now cannot live without.
1. The morning summary
Every morning it reads my email and sends me a short summary on WhatsApp. I read it with my first cup of tea, still half asleep, and I already know what the day holds. No scrolling, no panic.
An example of the idea. This is an illustration, not my real messages.
2. “What did I spend today?”
This is my favourite. During the day, if I wonder how much I have spent, I don't open my bank app, my email and my notes. I just message my assistant on WhatsApp: “What is the spending amount today?” It goes through my email and gives me the exact amount.
Example only. The amounts here are made up to show the format.
The first time it answered, I just sat there looking at the screen. It was such a small thing, but it felt like someone had quietly taken a weight off my shoulders. I didn't have to remember, search or add anything up. I only had to ask, the same way I would ask a person.
“Small help, given every single day, becomes a big feeling of being looked after.”
A picture says it better. Here is the whole system on one screen:
Gmail reads my emails | Google Drive my files and receipts | Google Sheets my records |
Memory remembers my rules | Morning workflow runs on a schedule | Safety rules read-only access |
↓ morning summary | ↑ my question |
Example: “What did I spend today?” → it checks my email → answers on WhatsApp
In words: my Google tools feed information into the Superagent. The Superagent has its own memory, a schedule (the morning job) and rules about what it is allowed to do. Then it talks to me through WhatsApp, in both directions. It sends me the morning summary, and I send it my questions.
I want to be very honest here, because nothing frustrates me more than a blog that promises magic and hides the limits.
What worked for me on the free plan
- Creating a Superagent and chatting with it.
- Connecting Gmail, Google Drive and Google Sheets.
- Connecting WhatsApp. Base44 says WhatsApp for agents is available free on all plans (Base44 docs).
- A scheduled morning job that sends me a summary.
- Asking questions on WhatsApp, like my spending question.
The limits I keep in mind
- Credits. Everything uses credits. Base44's agent page says the Free plan includes 25 message credits and 100 integration credits a month (Base44 AI agent builder page). For a Superagent on the Free plan, the documentation says it uses the plan's daily and monthly credits, and when they run out it stops replying until they reset, and scheduled workflows skip their runs until then (Base44 docs: Customizing your Superagent). Missed runs do not run later (Base44 docs: Setting up workflows). So I keep my instructions short and don't chat endlessly.
- Some features need a paid plan. Giving the Superagent a phone number so it can call you, and webhooks, need the Builder plan or higher according to the same documentation. I only use WhatsApp, so I don't miss them.
- Plans change. One thing worth knowing: Base44's documentation for connectors inside apps mentions a Builder plan or higher (Google Workspace connectors page). On my free Superagent I was able to connect my Google tools, but rules like this can change at any time, so please check the pricing page and the changelog before you start.
P.S. To see how many credits you have used, open your Superagent, go to Agent Settings, then Credit usage. I look at it once in a while, like checking the fuel in a car.
Don't worry if this looks like a lot. Go slowly, one step at a time. The first time took me a little while, and now it feels simple. Base44's own guide for all of this is here: Creating a Superagent.
From now on, only read my emails. Never send, delete or change anything. Keep answers short and friendly.
Your Superagent can keep standing rules like this in its memory.Every morning at 7 AM, read my unread Gmail from the last 24 hours. Summarize the important ones in 5 short bullet points. Tell me which ones need a reply and list any payment or receipt emails. Send it to me on WhatsApp.
Your Superagent will ask a few questions if it needs more detail, and the new workflow appears on the Workflows page (Base44 docs: Setting up workflows). When I ask how much I spent today, check my Gmail for payment, receipt and bank alert emails from today. List each one with its amount, then show the total. If an email is unclear, tell me instead of guessing.
Then test it from WhatsApp: “What is the spending amount today?”You don't need technical words. Plain sentences work. Here are a few more ideas, in the same style:
Every evening at 8 PM, tell me which emails I still haven't answered, in three lines.
Find the file in my Drive about [topic] and tell me what it says in simple words.
Look at my Google Sheet called [name] and tell me the total for this week.
When I send you a photo of a receipt, tell me what the amount and date are.
The last idea depends on what your agent and plan can do. Test it with a harmless example first. Words in square brackets are placeholders for you to change.
When something can read your email, you must treat it with respect. Money emails, personal messages and private files are sensitive. Here is how I think about it, and what I'd suggest to you.
- Start read-only. Let it look before you let it act. Base44 lets you limit a connector to viewing data, and lets you write “connector rules” like only reading emails and never sending or deleting them (Security settings).
- Check the numbers. An AI can misread an email. Treat the spending total as a very good helper, not as the final truth. Every now and then, compare it with your bank app, especially before an important decision.
- Ask it to be honest. My instruction says: if you are not sure, tell me instead of guessing. I recommend the same.
- Know where your data goes. Base44's documentation says whether your data can be used to train AI models depends on your plan. Read the privacy and security page and decide if you are comfortable, especially with financial emails.
- You can always take access back. In Base44 you can disconnect a connector from the Plugins page. In your Google account you can also review and remove apps that have access (Google Account permissions).
- Do not share your agent's WhatsApp chat. In a group chat, other people can talk to it, so keep private questions, like your spending, in your personal chat only.
- The morning message didn't arrive. Check the Workflows and Activity pages first. Then check Credit usage. If credits ran out, workflows skip their runs until credits are available again (Base44 docs).
- A workflow shows as paused. Base44 pauses a workflow automatically when it fails several runs in a row. Hover over the warning icon, fix the cause (often reconnecting a Google tool), then choose Resume and click Run Now to test.
- The summary is too long or too noisy. Edit the instruction. Ask for “5 short bullets” or “only things that need action”.
- The answer looks wrong. Ask: “Which emails did you use?” and check them. Then refine your rule.
- WhatsApp stopped replying. Check your credits first, then open Channels and look at the WhatsApp connection.
I used to think technology was for other people: programmers, young people, people with more time. This small experiment taught me something gentle. You don't need to be an expert. You need a real problem, a little patience, and the courage to try.
My problem was simple. I wanted calmer mornings and a way to know where my day, and my money, was going without a fight. A free account, three Google connections, one WhatsApp chat and a few plain sentences gave me that. It isn't perfect. It has limits, and I check it with a clear mind. But every morning when that quiet message arrives, I feel a little more organised and a little more in control. Honestly, a little more cared for, too.
“You don't have to build something huge. Build something small that makes your day lighter.”
If you try this, start small. One connection. One morning message. One question on WhatsApp. Then let it grow.
And if you do build your own, I would love to hear about it. What would you ask your assistant first? Tell me in the comments. Maybe you will give me my next idea. 😊
P.S. If you are nervous about connecting your email, that's a healthy feeling. Take your time, start read-only, and only go as far as you feel comfortable.
Disclaimer: this post is a personal experience and opinion. I'm not affiliated with Base44, Google or WhatsApp. Features, free-plan limits, credits and connector rules change often, and the numbers in the chat examples are made up. This is not financial advice, so please double-check money matters in your bank's own app and read each service's current terms and privacy information before connecting your accounts.
